WEEK 4 DAY 4 & 5: ARTY DESIGNERS / DANCING QUEENS

Activity 1: Fashion forward [4 points]

Coco Chanel was a French fashion designer from the early 1900s. She was very influential because she designed clothes for women that were beautiful, but also comfortable and practical. Before Coco came along, European women wore corsets which pulled in their waists, and dresses that had lots of lace. Coco Chanel introduced a completely new style, influenced by men’s fashion - trousers (pants), monochrome (black and white) fabric, and looser tops.

Twenty Seven Names is a contemporary (current) New Zealand fashion label that is also influential. The founders of the company are two friends, Rachel Easting and Anjali Burnett. Rachel and Anjali met when they were at primary school. When they left school, Anjali studied fashion design and Rachel studied art, before they set up their own business designing and making clothing. Where possible they employ young women and they keep as much of their production (making) in New Zealand as possible.

For this activity, please read this article about where some famous New Zealand brands got their names from. Brand names are very important to companies as this is how they are known.
On your blog, tell us how Twenty Seven Names got their name. Looking at their clothing brand, tell us whether you think this is a good name for them, or if they should change it to something else!
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The label name is a homage to the 27 people who have supported their business along the way. I think its a good name because it's different from all the rest and it truly must mean a lot to those 27 people.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Activity 2: Try Your Own Tapa [4 points]

Fatu Feu’u is a Samoan artist who lives in Aotearoa/New Zealand. He is mostly known for being a painter but he also creates sculptures, pottery, prints and glass works.

As an artist, Fatu Feu’u is primarily influenced by tapa cloth (siapo) patterns from Samoa, as well as tatau (tattoo), weaving, carving, and mask designs.

Many Pacific Islands have their own versions of tapa cloth. In Tonga it is called the ngatu, in Fiji - the masi, in Niue - the hiapo, in the Cook Islands - the tapa, and in Hawaii - the kapa. You can learn more about tapa cloth here.

For this activity please create your own tapa cloth design. You can draw your design on paper or using a drawing app such as Google Draw.

On your blog, post an image (photo or screenshot) or your tapa design and describe what each part of your picture represents (means).

Here are 3 of the Ngatu that I helped do , the 1st and 3rd one is the one I did on my own and the second photo is where I helped my nana do hers. There a tons more that we have stashed but I just wanted to show these three. We love Making Ngatus as well as making memories and sharing laughs. I only wanted to do it because they weren't so big like the normal ones they were a perfect size for me and what I wanted to design on it. The first one I decided to do anything but the second and third one is gonna be given as a gift because the people we are giving it to deserve it , they treasure us a lot. So the 2nd and 3rd one if a gift to a beautiful bunch of people.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Activity 3: Top Secret Street Art [6 points]

Banksy” is an influential artist from England. He is very private and secretive. In fact, almost no one knows who he really is - he always creates his art in secret! Banksy often uses stencils to create his street art.

Street art, or graffiti art, is all around us. Sometimes the art tells a story, sometimes it makes a building look more interesting, and sometimes it makes us think hard about something. In 2011, the city of Christchurch experienced a huge earthquake. A lot of the central city buildings fell down. It takes a long time to rebuild a city, and there are areas of Christchurch where buildings are still damaged and/or need to be rebuilt. Street artists in Christchurch have seen this as a chance to create artwork that helps to make the city beautiful again. You can see lots of amazing street art in Christchurch at the moment! Here is a site that shows you where to find it.
Task Description:
For this activity, we had to take a look at the Christchurch street art website and choose two different pieces of artwork. We then had to look at both pictures carefully and identify similarities and differences between the two.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
DAY 5: DANCING QUEENS

Activity 1: The World of Hip Hop [4 points]

Parris Goebel has taken over the world of dance! You might already have heard of her as she is pretty famous in New Zealand and around the world.

Parris was born in Manurewa, South Auckland, and she is of Samoan/Chinese/Scottish descent. Parris loved dancing when she was very little and she began hip-hop lessons when she was 10. By the age of 15 she was so good that she started her own all-girl dance crew called ReQuest, and they went on to win several first places at the World Hip-Hop Championships.

Parris later started The Palace Dance Studio in Auckland, and formed five more dance crews that won competitions worldwide. She has also worked as a choreographer for famous musicians like Justin Beiber, Jennifer Lopez, Rihanna, and Janet Jackson. In 2019, Parris and her new dance crew, The Royal Family, won the World Hip Hop Dance Championship.

For this activity, watch this video of their award winning performance. What do you like about the performance? What did the dance crew do well? What could they work on?

On your blog, write a review of The Royal Family performance. Please talk about the dance, dancers, costumes, and the music. What did you like? What didn’t you like as much? What do you think could have been improved?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
OMGGGG!!!! I am so speechless because that dance was so amazing , they are all blessed with a beautiful talent that I want but obviously don't have. There performance was outstanding and they really do deserve first place. I loved the music that they choose , it was very upbeat and very hyping, if I was in the crowd I will probably start dancing ( if I can LOL ). Lets just be honest they don't need to work on anything , they are a fantastic group , every thing was perfect.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Activity 2: En Pointe [4 points]

Most successful ballerinas start learning ballet when they are very young - 3 or 4 years old. World famous ballerina, Misty Copeland, wasn’t like most other girls. Instead of starting at age 3, she started ballet lessons at age 13!

By 14, Misty had won a national competition for ballet dancers. She continued to work very hard and, in 2015, she became the first African Amercian principal (lead) dancer of the Amercian Ballet Theatre - this is amazing because there were, and still are, very few African American ballet dancers in the country. When interviewed, Misty has said that she would like people to be able to “see dreams through me”. This is an example of an inspirational quote. Please click on this link to read more inspirational quotes.
I really Like the 4th quote. Why? The fourth quote isn't Conducted to me, it's conducted to some of my friends. I really enjoyed this quote because every time me and my friends have a game of competitive sports, They turn into a different person, taking the game literally and trash-talking other players. That is really why I like and enjoy this quote.

Task Description:
For this activity, we had to choose our favourite inspirational quote from this website.  Then create a text graphic using this quote.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Activity 3: Concluding the Journey [6 points]

Sadly, the Summer Learning Journey has now come to an end. It is time to reflect on everything that you have learned this summer about people who have had an impact, or changed the world, in some way.

For this activity, please reflect on your experience with the Summer Learning Journey programme this year.

On your blog please tell us:
Which activity you enjoyed the most
Which activity you enjoyed the least
Three things that you learned while completing the programme
What changes/improvements you would make to the programme for next year
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

That is all for the Summer Learning journey but I will still be posting.

WEEK 4 DAY 3: SCREEN LEGENDS

WEEK 4 DAY 3: SCREEN LEGENDS

Activity 1: Talk Show Host [4 points]

Oprah Winfrey is a bit of a television legend! She is best known for her talk show The Oprah Winfrey Show which ran for 25 years. Some people have said that she is one of the most influential women in the world. She is certainly very successful and has spent a lot of time helping others.

Like so many others, Oprah had to work very hard for her success. She had to overcome challenges and she experienced many struggles during her life, however, she persisted and eventually became a radio presenter, TV news presenter, and daytime talk show host. She now owns her own production company (HARPO), and television station (OWN). She also produces a magazine called ‘O.’

Oprah is passionate about education. She believes in the power of learning and has even started her own school in South Africa called The Oprah Winfrey Leadership School for Girls. She is keen to provide young people with opportunities to follow their passions.

For this activity, we would love to know more about your interests (passions) and your future plans. What do you think that you would like to do when you are older? Do you have a specific job in mind?
On your blog, please tell us about your future plans (i.e. what you plan to do when you finish high school or college). Would you prefer to start working right away or to continue with your studies?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Once I finish College I am gonna go to university and study more about doctors because that is my dream job for the future. I want to be a doctor because I want to safe lives and see happy smiles on peoples faces. I would also want to be a doctor because you get lots of money and it just means a lot to me.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Activity 2: Plot Points [4 points]

Lupita Nyong’o is a Mexican-Kenyan actress. She spent most of her childhood living in Kenya, Africa with her family. She is one of six children.

When she graduated from high school, she decided to move to the United States of America to follow her dreams of becoming an actress. She was cast in her first American film, East River, in 2008. She went on to write, produce and star in a number of films, including Black Panther and 12 Days a Slave, for which she won the 2013 Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress (otherwise known as an ‘Oscar’). Not only did Lupita win the Oscar but she was the first ever Kenyan and/or Mexican woman to win the award. Amazing ‘eh?!

Over the past few years Lupita has continued to act, she has earned a masters degree from Yale University and has written a children’s book called Sulwe. She has also written and produced her own movies.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Task Description:
For this activity, We had to imagine that we had the chance to write our own movie. What would it be about? Who would be your main characters? What are the important events that would take place? On our blog, we had to provide a synopsis which is a overview of our movie.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Activity 3: Feast or Famine [6 points]

Julian Dennison is a very funny guy! He is from Lower Hutt, near Wellington. He is only 17 years old but he has already starred in a number of movies and TV commercials. You may have seen him on Hunt for the Wilderpeople, Deadpool, or in the Lynx ads.

Julian is not only a funny actor. He recently joined up with World Vision to be a 40 Hour Famine Ambassador. He travelled with World Vision to Uganda to meet some of the refugees from South Sudan who are living there. Check out this video.

For this activity, we would like to know if you would consider doing a 20 or 40 Hour Famine to raise money for charity.

On your blog, tell us whether, or not, you would participate in 20 or 40 Hour Famine. If you have already participated in a 20 or 40 Hour Famine, please share your experience, including why you decided to participate and some highlights and challenges of the experience. To get full points, please provide at least six sentences.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I would love to join the 40 Hour Famine because I can raise money for charity and that charity would be for the kids. I would also raise money to send them some food and supplies. It really puts a smile on my face and others to see Julian Dennis there giving supplies. I can just imagine myself having no food and starving , then I remember my other brothers and sisters out there are also suffering because they don't have food. Food is very important because without food you could die. My answer for this task would be yes I would love to join because it would mean a lot to me to raise money and give it to a charity for kids.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sorry I haven't been posting I have been very busy lately , but 6 activity's coming your way tomorrow.

WEEK 4 DAY 2: MUSOS

DAY 2: MUSOS

Activity 1: Getting Stronger [4 points]

Aaradhna is a Samoan-Indian singer from New Zealand. As a girl, Aaradhna sang traditional Samoan and country songs with her family, eventually joining the senior choir at her high school (Porirua College). She gained international recognition in 2004 when she paired up with Adeaze to release the song, “Getting Stronger.” The song went to number one on the New Zealand Singles Chart and it is still one of my all-time favorites, to this day!

Speaking of favorite songs, we would love to know who you listen to and what songs you like the most.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Task Description:
For this activity we had to list our ‘Top 5’ favorite artists (singers or bands) and our ‘Top 5’ favorite songs. They can be from any time period and any genre (type) of music.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-Activity 2: K-pop heroes [4 points]

BTS, or Bangtan Boys, is a seven member boy band from South Korea. They have sold over 15 million albums in South Korea, which make them the best selling artists in South Korea of all time. They have topped the music charts in the United States of America and around the world.

They began singing hip hop but now sing mostly K-Pop (Korean Pop). Most of their songs are sung in Korean - their first language.

BTS is famous for making great music videos and for singing about topics that many people can relate to - love, self-confidence, etc. They have a huge and very loyal fan base. Their fans are called the BTS A.R.M.Y.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I do watch BTS and I do love all there music. I love  the fact that they standby each other and that they repsent Korea with pride. They also have amazing talents and they don't like to show they love to keep it hidden. They have faith and confidence in everything they do.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Activity 3: Girl Power [6 points]

Jessica Mauboy is an Aboriginal Australian singer. She rose to fame when she was runner-up in the 2006 Australian Idol, and has gone on to record a number of very successful songs. She is a role model for both girls, and indigenous Australians as she has been so successful in her music and acting career.

Dame Kiri Te Kanawa is an opera singer from Aotearoa/New Zealand. She became one of the best sopranos (a female singer with a high voice) in the world. Dame Kiri Te Kanawa is Māori, however she was adopted when she was a baby and very little is known about her birth family.

For young singers, both of these women can serve as role models - people who have faced challenges and overcome them in order to achieve their dreams of becoming professional singers

WEEK 4 DAY 1: BOOKWORMS

DAY 1: BOOKWORMS

Activity 1: Rags to Riches [4 points]

J. K. Rowling is one of the most well known authors in the world. She wrote the Harry Potter series of books. Over 500 million copies of her books have been sold, making J. K. Rowling the world’s first billionaire author.

While she was writing the first Harry Potter book, she was a single mum with very little money. She used to write while her daughter Jessica was asleep. She used her initials ‘J.K.’ instead of her name (Joanne) because her publisher thought that boys might not want to read a book written by a woman.

J. K. Rowling has done many interviews which have revealed things about her as a writer and as a person. One of these interviews was conducted by a very famous television personality, Oprah Winfrey (you can find more about her on Day 3, Activity 1!).

As well as books needing to be engaging and interesting for the reader, it is important that they are engaging and interesting on the cover too. We sometimes say “Don’t judge a book by it’s cover” but we often choose books (if we don’t know much about them) when they have an attractive cover!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Task Description:
For this activity, we had to design a book cover of our favorite book. We needed to think about what needs to be on the cover (the title, author, illustrator), pictures, colour, etc. Here is my plan little book cover, I am sorry that it isn't fancy and cool but I was very tired and needed to post it today other wise it would bug me. This isn't a way to cheat but if you look at the time that I posted this it was a roller coaster.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Activity 2: Romeo and Juliet [4 points]

William Shakespeare (1564-1616) was an author, poet and playwright. He is best known for the plays that he wrote while living in England in the 16th Century. Although they were written a long time ago, they are still popular because they talk about things that are familiar to us - love, revenge, confusion, betrayal, jealousy, hurt, etc. You might have heard of some of his plays: Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, King Lear. Many of them have also been made into movies.

Shakespeare wrote his plays in English, however, it is not the same version of English that we have now. In fact, many of the words that we use today, in 2019, weren’t used back in 1600 (and vice versa).
Task Description:
For this activity, we had to learn more about‘Shakespearean English’ - the version of English that Shakespeare used to write his plays. We then had to write a short little recount on what we did this morning , Then use this translating tool to turn it into Shakespearean English.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Activity 3: The Diary of Anne Frank [6 points]

Anne Frank was a very brave girl. She was born and raised in a Jewish family in Germany in the 1930s. When World War II started, Anne and her family were forced to hide because the German politicians (Nazis) did not like Jewish people. She and her family hid out in a secret room in their house for two full years. During this time, Anne wrote in a diary. When the war ended, Anne’s dad found the diary and made it into a book. He called it The Diary of Anne Frank or The Diary of a Young Girl.

I know lots of people who keep a diary. Often they will record what they did during the day or recount stories about special events that have taken place.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
My story today is all about me and my two friends. There name is Zamera and Madison , We got the opportunity to go watch movies together , eat and go Extreme. As we picked each other up we went together in a car with Zamera mum. We went to Hoyts Cinemas in Botany and watched Maleficent. Minutes and hours went passed , then the movie was finally done, It was a fantastic movie. We went down and had lunch , it was very delicious. When we were all done, we went to the arcade and spent hours there. It was tons of fun I got the most tickets and got a lot of prizes. When we finished at the arcade we grabbed ourselves some ice cream and went on a fun little expedition. I would write a lot more but I was so tired.

Summer Learning Journey WEEK 4 Day 5

Summer Learning Journey WEEK 4 Day 4

DAY 4: Making Promises

Activity 1: Campaigning for Conservation [4 points]
New Zealand is home to so many beautiful, unique and, sometimes, endangered animals and habitats. The Forest & Bird organisation is working really hard to protect vulnerable animals and places in NZ. They are doing everything that they can to raise money and to raise awareness so that everyone knows about these issues. These are called ‘campaigns.’ Check out the Forest & Bird campaigns site to learn more about them.
Imagine, that you have been hired by Forest & Bird New Zealand to work on one of their campaigns. It is your job to come up with a catchy slogan for the campaign. A slogan is a short phrase or sentence that is used to advertise something. Check out examples of common slogans and logos below.

On your blog, tell us which campaign you have chosen to support and provide us with a slogan for that campaign.
I choose just do it by Nike. Why? Because if you see rubbish and in your head your like should pick I up or nah. Come on just do it even if it is not yours.
Activity 2: The Plastic Pledge [4 points]

Over the past few decades some of New Zealand’s beaches have become dumping grounds for waste and rubbish. Almost 80% of this waste is made up of plastic items. Yikes!
Some companies in New Zealand have heard about the problem and agreed to cut down on their use of plastic. Countdown supermarkets, for example, have announced that they will stop giving out plastic bags to customers.  What do you think of this idea? What do your friends and family think? Is it a good idea or not?
For this activity, please ask one member of your family and/or a friend what they think about Countdown’s decision to go ‘plastic bag free.’
On your blog, tell us what they think about Countdown’s decision to stop using plastic bags.
I asked my mum and she said it will pro-ply be 50 50. The reason why she said 50 50 was because some people use there plastic bags for there little bins that they might use for paper or for something else. And the other reason was because our plastic food wraps and plastic bag are flowing in the sea and it is killing our sea creatures.

Activity 3: Restricted Access [10 points]
While much of our programme has focused on New Zealand, it is important that we also consider the environment in other places as well. One of the most unusual and spectacular sites to visit outside of New Zealand is called Machu Picchu. It is an ancient city that was built high up in the mountains in the country of Peru in South America. You have to take a train and/or walk through a series of mountains and valleys to reach it.

Over the past few decades millions of tourists have made the trek to Machu Picchu. Unfortunately, this has damaged the area and the local government has decided to restrict the number of visitors to the site each year. This decision has upset a lot of tourists who really want to see Machu Picchu but aren’t allowed to go.

On your blog, tell us what you think about the government’s decision to restrict the number of tourists able to visit this special site. Is it fair? Be sure to tell us why you feel the way that you do.
Well I think it wouldn't be fair to the tourist because the tourist that have already seen it will be talking about it about how amazing it was and blah blah. But the others don't know what it looks like because they haven't been there to see it real life and what it actually looks like. It looks amazing that I would wanna go there as well.

Summer Learning Journey WEEK 4 Day 3

DAY 3: Taking Action

Activity 1: Predator Free 2050 – A Call to Arms [4 points]
There is currently a huge drive to get rid of all predators from New Zealand. Predators are animals that, in some way, damage our natural environment. Many organisations are working hard to accomplish this goal.

Click on the links below to watch videos about three of the current projects operating to make New Zealand ‘Predator Free by 2050.’
Predator Free Video #1: Cacophony Project
Predator Free Video #2: Taranaki Mounga Project
Predator Free Video #3: Zero Invasive Predators (ZIP)
On your blog, tell us which one of the videos you liked the best and why..
well I like the 3rd video because he was being very helpful to the birds and he was being creative just like the others. When they created that web site I really wanted to join. It was hard for me to pick because they are all amazing , helpful and creative.I really wish I was there to help.

Activity 2: Protecting the Most Vulnerable - Fact or Fiction? [4 points]
Here in New Zealand we have a native dolphin, the Māui Dolphin, that is on the verge of extinction (disappearing forever). As of this year, there are only 63 Māui dolphins left and people predict that they will be extinct by 2033. Environmentalists are working hard to save the dolphin because it is such a special and unique animal. To learn more about the Māui Dolphin, please follow this link. Once you have learned more about the dolphin, it is time for you to share your learning with us.
On your blog, post three facts that you learned about the Māui Dolphin that are true. Then, using your imagination, create three more statements about Māui dolphins that are not true (i.e. false). Please don’t tell us which of your statements about Māui Dolphins are true and which are false. It will be the job of the students and staff who read your blog to figure it out.

Activity 3: The Power of Ten [10 points]

Sir David Attenborough is a famous TV presenter from England who loves nature and the natural world. He has spent his career filming documentaries about the planet and working hard to protect it. In a recent interview, Sir David was asked to reflect on all that he had learned and to imagine that he had suddenly been given the power to save 10 animals and/or plants from extinction (disappearing forever).
After thinking about the question, he listed these 10 species (animals/plants):

1. Black Lion Tamarin (pictured to the right)

Let’s imagine that you had the same power and that you could save 10 species (animals or plants) from extinction. Who would you save? If I had the choice I would probably save animals like the elephant, white tiger and rhinoceros because they are unique and have lived for centuries on earth. I would also like to save some of my favourite flowers including hydrangeas and calla lily flowers. What about you?

Left to right: White tiger, Hydrangeas, Calla Lily

On your blog, list 10 species (animals or plants) that you would protect from extinction. For each one, give a reason as to why you think it is important to protect.

Summer Learning Journey WEEK 4 Day 2

AY 2: Protecting Our Own

Activity 1: A Flying Fox [4 points]

New Zealand has some of the most beautiful forests in the world. Both New Zealanders and tourists, alike, enjoy walking through these forests. Unfortunately, constantly walking through forests can damage the plants and animals (flora and fauna) that live there. In an attempt to protect the local flora and fauna, an eco-tourism company in Rotorua came up with an idea. The Rotorua Canopy Tours Company designed a series of ziplines that sit above the forest canopy (top). People can ‘zip’ from one section of the forest to another, looking down on the beautiful natural areas below. To see what ziplining looks like, check out this video. I have tried ziplining and I really enjoyed it, however, I must admit that I was pretty scared to try it at first. How would you feel if you had the chance to go ziplining in Rotorua?
On your blog, tell us how you would feel about going ziplining in Rotorua. Try to use some descriptive words (adjectives) and action words (verbs) in your post!.
I would be very anxious a bit nervous and excited, but most of all , very anxious. I would be glad that I was able to come on this expedition but I would be much more confident if my friends and family came with me.

Activity 2: A Protective Plant [4 points]
There are concerns about the water quality of some of the rivers, streams and oceans in and around New Zealand. Some people have suggested that we plant flowers and plants on the banks of our most polluted rivers to stop the spread of the pollution. Apparently, the plants can act as filters, absorbing some of the chemicals (pollutants) that are moving across the land, on their way to the river.
Planting can be a lot of fun! Have you ever planted a garden? Aronui and I are going to make our very own edible garden this year. We are going to plant a number of veggies, fruits and herbs, including mint, coriander, parsley, lemongrass, onions, tomatoes, beans, zucchinis, kumara and strawberries. Yum! If you could plant an edible garden what would you plant in it?

On your blog list 10 veggies, fruits, or herbs that you would plant in your garden.
Strawberry's
apple
kiwifruit
grape
pear
broccoli
cauliflower
carrot
Nectarine
Fejoa / Guava

Activity 3: A House is Not a Home [10 points]

New Zealand is home to some unique wildlife that cannot be found anywhere else in the world. While we work very hard to protect our natural habitats so, too, do people living and working in other countries. One of the oldest international wildlife conservation organisations is called ‘Fauna & Flora International’ (FFI). They support a number of projects around the world, including those working to protect Lansan trees in the Caribbean, fruit forests in Tajikistan, and national reserves in Mozambique. Read about each of these projects and choose the one that interests you the most.

On your blog, tell us which project you find most interesting and why..
I loved the lansan trees in the Caribbean because she is trying her best to make this tree alive more. She is also a brave girl who had chosen herself to help this tree. Her confident and bravery had got her somewhere she pro ply had been wanting to be. This tree has lost about 60% of there range in the Eastern Caribbean.
