DAY 5: The Sky’s the Limit!
Activity 1: Environment Day - Beat Plastic Pollution [4 points]
Every year we celebrate World Environment Day in June. On World Environment Day we do what we can to protect our planet. This year the focus is on reducing the use of plastic bags and water bottles. Watch this Environment Day video to learn more about it!
What could you and your family do to protect the planet?
On your blog tell us three things that you could do to help save the planet.
Me and my family will protect the planet by Turing plastic water bottles into reusable metal bottles.
We would also help by turning plastic bags into reusable bags that we could take to the supermarket.
And last but not least cutlery yeah we need plastic cutlery when we are having shared lunch but instead we can use reusable cutlery that is made out of metal.
Activity 2: Adoption Day [4 points]
Not only can you help the planet by reducing, reusing and recycling, you can also help to save animals and plants by ‘adopting’ them. To ‘adopt’ an animal through the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), you need to visit their adopt a species page, read through the list of animals and choose one.
With the WWF, you don’t actually adopt the animal and bring it home! It’s a symbolic adoption. In this case you pay a fee ($55.00) and the money is used to provide food and care for your chosen animal. Visit the WWF site and take a look at the animals who are available for adoption. Choose your ‘top three’ animals from the website.
On your blog, list the three animals that you have chosen and then compare and contrast them. How are they similar? How are they different? At the bottom of you post, tell us which of the three animals you would most like to adopt..
Activity 3: Concluding the Journey [10 points]
Sadly, the Summer Learning Journey has now come to an end. It is time to reflect on everything that you have learned about the environment and, particularly, about how you can protect and preserve it.
On your blog please tell us:
What is one thing that you learned from participating in the Summer Learning Journey programme this year?
I have learnt about amazing birds that need out help. I think that my reading is getting better. I have learnt that so many animals are being extinct and it needs out help.
What is one thing that surprised What is one thing that concerned or upset you?
One thing that surprised me the most was when I found out that many turtles have been washed up to land because plastic things have been in the water for a while and they think it is food and eat it which makes them very sick.
One thing that me and family is gonna do is if we see rubbish we will pick it up even if it is not ours

Kia Ora Sonnia!
ReplyDeleteWow - you finished the Summer Learning Journey so quickly! We are so impressed by your awesome efforts this year. You should be really proud of yourself for continuing your learning throughout the summer holidays and now you will be ready for when school starts! It's awesome that you think your reading has improved too.
You're so right! There are so many birds (and other animals) that need our help. Far too many of them are in danger of becoming extinct. It is so important that we do what we can to help and save our wildlife and our environment. Picking up rubbish is a very good way to do this.
In a few weeks I will be coming to assembly to hand out all the prizes for the Summer Learning Journey. I can't wait to see you there!
Bye for now,
Sophie :)
Kia Ora Sonnia,
ReplyDeleteHuge congratulations on completing the entire Summer Learning Journey programme this year. Wow! That is amazing!
I am thrilled to read that you feel that you have learned a lot about the natural environment in New Zealand and, particularly, about the amazing birds that we have here in the country. I am also really happy to see that you feel that your reading has gotten better. That is fabulous!
We can't wait to see you when we come into Pt England to hand out the certificates and prizes for the Summer Learning Journey programme this year. Sophie is going to email Mr Burt to ask when we are able to come in. I'm really hoping to come with her so that I can congratulate you in person. What an awesome job you have done!
Our team is still working through all of the activities so you can expect a few more comments over the coming days. We've had so many students participate this year that it is taking us a little while to get through to everyone but we are very aware of the awesome work that you have done and will definitely be posting more comments very soon:)
Way to go, Sonnia!
All the best for a great year ahead.
Rachel :)
