WEEK 1: A Place to Stand
Welcome to the first week of the Summer Learning Journey. For our first week, we are going to be learning all about the land habitats here in New Zealand. It is going to be a great adventure!
Activity 1: The Legend of New Zealand [4 points] #1
According to Māori mythology, much of Aotearoa New Zealand was formed when Māui, a powerful demigod, fished it out of the sea. Legend has it that Māui created a magical fish hook from the jawbone of his grandmother and that one day he took his hook, boarded a boat, and rode out into the middle of the Pacific Ocean. Once at sea, he threw his magical hook into the water and caught a fish. This ‘fish’ was actually the North Island of New Zealand! In honour of this legend, the North Island of New Zealand is sometimes referred to as Te Ika a Māui or ‘Māui’s fish’ and the South Island of New Zealand is sometimes referred to as Te Waka a Māui or ‘Māui’s canoe’.
To learn more cool facts about New Zealand, check out the Tourism NZ website. Read the fun facts posted on the website and choose your ‘Top 3.’ On your blog, post your ‘Top 3 Fun Facts’ about NZ in your own words.
For today task we were told to list 3 fun facts but I decided to do 10 because I am in a good feeling.
1. The meaning of Aotearoa is the land of the long white cloud .
2. The Auckland City Sky Tower is 328 meters high.
3. The capitol of New Zealand is Wellington.
4. 30 to 40 % of our land is forest.
5. Auckland is the biggest city in New Zealand Aotearoa.
6. Here in New Zealand there are no snakes.
8. New Zealand had also won ther first ever Rugby World Cup, that was held in 1987.
9. In New Zealand the Hector’s Dolphin, is one of the world’s smallest marine dolphin, which grows to a maximum length of 1.5 meters.
10. New Zealanders are also known as the humans who love there car. Because of that, New Zealand has some of the highest ownership rates in the world.
Activity 2: North and South [4 points] #2 blog post
The country of New Zealand is made up of two main islands – the North Island and the South Island. Approximately 77% of the New Zealand population live in the North Island. Many of these people (including our Summer Learning Journey design team) live in Auckland city. Auckland is a great place to live with lots of amazing parks, beautiful waterways and stunning scenery to enjoy. It is also a busy, vibrant city with many cafes, museums, galleries and theatres to visit. I feel lucky to call Auckland my ‘hometown.’
Now it is time to think about your hometown. What is special about where you live? On your blog, describe your hometown. Be sure to include lots of describing words (adjectives) in your post.
To those who don't know me I am Sonnia I Iive in the east side of Auckland. I am very glad to be in Auckland as many people get along with each other kindly. So much people are very respect full to each other that it makes there day. Almost every where you go you will receive a smile as you walk past that person. The special thing about my home town is everyone gets along well and they don't hate each other we look after each other and most of all we respect each other.
The Activity 3: Ice, Ice Baby [10 points] # 3
Antarctica is the world’s coldest continent. Even though it is made up of ice, it is also the driest continent in the world. In fact, it hasn’t rained there for nearly 2 million years! It is home to many animals such as whales, seals, birds, and fish. There are no permanent human residents (people who live there all the time) in Antarctica, however scientists do visit and stay in Antarctica for a while to study it.
This year the airline, Air New Zealand, filmed their safety video in Antarctica. They used some fabulous actors from Hornby Primary School in Christchurch. Just like on aeroplanes, we also need to keep safe and be smart online. We need to think about the type of information we are sharing online, who we are sharing information with, and how to have a positive digital footprint.
On your blog, make a copy of this footprint and, inside the footprint, explain how you create a positive, digital footprint. What do you do to stay smart online?.

Kia ora Sonnia,
ReplyDeleteIt is so great to see that you have joined us again for another great holiday of blogging! Welcome back!
I loved reading through all of your posts and have made sure that we have tracked them all in our big spreadsheet. We will post comments on each one as we make our way through the summer but I wanted to start with this post because I loved your first activity. It was awesome to see you post not three but ten 'Fun Facts' about New Zealand. Wow! What an great effort!
I learned a few new things from reading your post that I did not know before. For example, I had not idea that we had one of the highest rates of car ownership in the world. That is quite a stat (statistic) for such a small country!
Were you surprised by any of the facts that you read on the website? If so, which fact surprised you the most?
I hope that you will continue to learn and share your learning with us throughout the summer.
See you online again soon!
Cheers,
Rachel :)
Hi Rachel , I am very glad that I am doing Summer learning Journey because it helps with my reading and that is one of my goals. I was really surprised about the 7th fact. The longest name in the world was Taumatawhakatangihangakoauauotamateapokaiwhenuakitanatahu I cant pronounce this I tried but it's confusing.
ReplyDeleteKia Ora Sonnia,
DeleteIt really is a difficult word to pronounce, isn't it? I have tried to master it a couple of times but am still struggling!
I am so pleased that your reading is improving by working on the Summer Learning Journey programme. That is one of our goals as a programme team. We really want to help students improve their literacy skills and return to school in February ready to continue their learning and to have a really successful year!
Keep up the great work with your blogging. I'm sorry that I haven't posted a new comment in the past few days. I am the only team member working over the holiday so I have to make my way through all 600+ blogs. It takes me a little while to get back to Pt England. My apologies!
Bye for now~
Rachel :)
