Summer learning journey week 1 Day 3
DAY 3: Awesome Animals
Activity 1: Fantastic Beasts [4 points]
In New Zealand we have many unusual animals. One of the most unusual is the kiwi bird - a bird that does not have wings and can not fly. Pretty strange, eh?! J.K. Rowling, the author of the Harry Potter books, has recently written a new book about strange or unusual animals called ‘Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.’
For this activity, please watch this cool book trailer. Year 7 and Year 8 students in South Auckland, New Zealand helped to make it. Once you have watched the video, use your imagination and create your very own beast. What does your beast look, smell, feel, and sound like?
On your blog, post a description of your beast. Use interesting adjectives (describing words) to tell us about your beast.
My unicorn beast is very strong. Shes kind , nice and amazing. She helps her friends and she saves her world. She smells very nice , just like candy. She has so many friends that she love playing with.
Activity 2: The Secretive Skink [4 points]
We have a number of small lizards (geckos and skinks) living in New Zealand. One of the least common is the Chevron Skink. According to the Department of Conservation, Chevron Skinks live mostly on two islands - Great Barrier Island and Little Barrier Island. These islands are ‘animal reserves.’ Very few people, other than staff working for the New Zealand Department of Conservation (DOC), are allowed to live there. The DOC staff are called ‘Rangers.’ Their job is to protect the wildlife (animals and plants) living on the island.
Would you like to be a DOC ranger and live with the animals on Great Barrier Island?
On your blog list three pros (good things) and three cons (bad things) about working as a DOC ranger. At the bottom of your post, tell us whether you would like to be a DOC Ranger or not
PROS
The good thing I like about doc rangers is staying in my hometown and being able to save animals or creatures. Also being able to see more endangered animals in our world. I am just glad to see more animal and insects in our world thanks to all the doc rangers.
CONS
I don't think I would like to be a doc ranger because sometimes you have to kill some insects and other animals. I also wouldn't wanna be one because you have to travel around the world and I am not that type of person that likes to go on trip because I am afraid about what would happen like you never know. Sometimes for me it's kinda disgusting touching things that I haven't touch in my life.
Activity 3: The WWF: World Wildlife Fund [10 points]
In 1961, a number of people came together to start an organisation called the World Wildlife Fund (WWF). The main goal of this organisation was/is to protect life on earth. Hundreds of WWF staff work in countries all over the world trying to protect our planet and the animals who live here. To learn more about their amazing work, click on one of the two video links below.
Clip #1: Freshwater Seals
Clip #2: Tigers
Once you have watched the video, go to your blog and, using full sentences, tell us:
1) The name of the animal the WWF is working to save.
2) What the WWF is doing to help the animal.

2) What the WWF is doing to help the animal.
3) What, if any, success they have had protecting the animal.
WWF is working on saving Saimaa ringed Seals , this seal is one of the most endangered seals in the world. WWF was helping the seals by making a snow bank for there little pups because if there born on open ice they wont have much protection against predators. I guess the success is the doc rangers get to rescue or save lives of animals.

Kia ora Sonnia,
ReplyDeleteActivity 1: Fantastic Beasts: You beast looks very cute! I really like that you did the drawing of it yourself too! Also, it's nice that it smells like candy! :0) I know that all girls like unicorns however, for the future consider to make your very own unicorn with some exclusive features to make your work more original! You could go " crazy out there" here and, still do something quite cuddly! Nevertheless, this is a good job and you did fill the brief, well done!
Activity 2: The Secretive Skink: For this task we are requesting for you to list three pros (good things) and three cons (bad things) and at the end tell us if you would like or not to be a DOC ranger. I agree with you as I think that is an amazing job to be able to save more endangers animals in our world. However, I also think it would be hard because it would be quite a lonely job where you need to stay in wild locations for long periods of time.
For this post I couldn't quite get if you want or not to be a DOC ranger. In order for you to gain full points for this activity I will need you to hoop back and do couple things: First, write you three key points in a bullet or numbered list so is easier and clear to understand each point. Secondly, write a sentence at the end saying if you want or not to be a DOC ranger and why. Could you do that and let me know by replying to this e-mail? That would be really wonderful.
Activity 3: The WWF: World Wildlife Fund: You did complete the task well and stick to the main points on your answers. Also, it is nice that you took time to explain about the importance of the snow banks in order for the fresh water seals being able to give birth to their cubs as that give your readers a good context to understand what is that you are writing about.
You are doing so well, keep up with your amazing work!
Kia kaha,
Patricia
